Messina – Villa San Giovanni, Italy

A road and rail suspension bridge between Sicily and mainland Italy. Its main span of 3.3 km would be by far the longest in the world, hung from two towers about 400 m tall.

The government approved the project in August 2025, but Italy's audit court refused to register the approval in October 2025. A law passed in May 2026 put the cost at about €14.4 billion and moved much of the spending to 2030–2034. A new approval was being prepared in late October 2026, and it must pass the audit court again before work can start.
