A twin-tube rail tunnel under the Alps between the Maurienne valley in France and the Susa valley in Italy, the heart of a new freight and passenger line between Lyon and Turin. At 57.5 km it will be one of the longest rail tunnels in the world, with about 45 km on the French side.
Excavation is under way on the French side, and the first boring machine for the Italian side has been delivered. The cross-border section is estimated at about €11 billion, with the EU paying 40 percent, and opening is planned for the end of 2033.
