A twin-tube rail tunnel under the Semmering Pass between Lower Austria and Styria, replacing the steep 19th-century Semmering Railway on the main line from Vienna to Graz. Trains will run at up to 230 km/h.
Construction began in 2012 and tunneling finished at the end of 2024. In May 2026 an official delegation drove through the whole tunnel for the first time, and ÖBB now plans the first trains for the end of 2029, cutting Vienna–Graz to about 1 hour 50 minutes. The cost was last estimated at about €4.2 billion.
