A new motorway linking Essex and Kent east of the Dartford Crossing, running under the River Thames in twin road tunnels that will be the longest in the UK. It is meant to take pressure off the Dartford Crossing, one of the busiest roads in the country.
It was approved in March 2025, and early construction began in March 2026. A 16.4-metre boring machine, the largest ever used in Europe, is due on site in 2028. The cost is estimated at about £10.6 billion, and opening is planned for 2034.
