The second of the twin office towers of the Parque Central complex in central Caracas, completed in 1983, four years after the West Tower. For decades the two towers were the tallest buildings in South America and the main landmark of the Caracas skyline. The East Tower housed government offices.
On October 17, 2004 a fire broke out in the East Tower and burned from the 34th to the 50th floor for more than a day, because the sprinkler and standpipe systems did not work. The tower was later restored, and a 30-meter antenna representing the sword of Simón Bolívar was added on top, taking it to 255 meters to the tip. The antenna does not count toward its height, so the Skyscraper Center lists both towers at 225 meters.
